Georgia Medical Cannabis Card Cost (Fees, Doctor Visits, Renewals, and What to Expect)

8 minutes read

If you are budgeting for a Georgia medical cannabis card, the total cost comes from four separate places: the physician evaluation, the state registry card fee, renewal every five years, and the products themselves. Only one of those, the state fee, is the same for everyone. This guide breaks down each category, shows which numbers are fixed by the state and which vary, and explains how to confirm current prices before you pay anyone. If you want to check your eligibility first, start with our Do You Qualify page.

The Short Answer

According to the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH), the state Medical Cannabis card costs $30, plus a $3.75 service fee if you pay through DPH’s online payment portal. The card is valid for five years, and health insurance does not cover the card fee.

Everything else depends on your choices:

  • The physician evaluation is set by the practice you choose and is paid to that practice, not to the state.
  • Renewal every five years means another physician visit and another state card fee.
  • Products vary by type, strength, and location and are purchased separately.

Always confirm current prices directly with DPH and with your provider before paying. Fees can change, and the state figures in this guide are current as of September 2026.

Cost 1: The Physician Evaluation

Georgia law makes physician certification the only way into the registry. DPH notes that physicians are not required to certify patients and that the decision rests entirely on the physician’s medical judgment. The evaluation is a separate charge from the state fee, and you pay it to the practice.

What drives the price. Practices set their own fees. The price may reflect the visit format, whether records review is included, and whether the practice handles the registry filing for you.

What to ask before you book:

  1. What exactly does the fee cover: the visit, records review, and registry filing?
  2. Is the state card fee included, or do I pay DPH separately? (With DPH’s process, the state fee is paid directly to DPH after certification.)
  3. What happens to my payment if the physician does not certify me?
  4. Is a renewal visit priced differently from a first visit?
  5. Are there any other charges, such as fees for rescheduling?

Insurance. DPH says health insurance does not cover the card fee. Whether a physician visit can be billed to insurance depends on the practice and your plan, so ask the practice directly.

At Elevated Health MD. Our evaluation fee covers your pre-qualification review, your telehealth visit with a Georgia-licensed physician, and the registry records filing. It is separate from the state card fee, and the current price is shown before you book at Get Started. We review your condition and records before you pay for a visit, so you know where you stand first.

Cost 2: The State Registry Card Fee

Once a physician certifies you and uploads your information, DPH verifies it and emails you payment instructions. According to DPH:

The fee. The Medical Cannabis card costs $30 per card.

Online payment. Paying through DPH’s secure portal adds a $3.75 service fee, for a total of $33.75.

Money order option. If you cannot pay through the portal or do not have email access, you can mail a $30 money order to the Georgia Department of Public Health, Attn: Medical Cannabis Program, at the address listed on the DPH patient page.

The 60-day deadline. Payment must be submitted within 60 days. After that, DPH cancels the card and you must contact your physician to reinstate it, which can mean additional time and possibly another fee from the practice. Pay promptly when the email arrives.

Delivery. After payment, DPH ships the card by UPS with a signature required and asks patients to allow up to 10 business days. After three failed delivery attempts, the package returns to DPH and you must contact the department to have it reshipped.

Insurance. DPH states that health insurance does not cover the cost of the card.

Cost 3: Caregiver Cards

If a caregiver will purchase or administer products for a patient, the caregiver needs a card too. DPH states that each caregiver may apply for a card and that each card costs $30. A household with a patient and two caregivers should budget for three state card fees, plus the portal fee on each if paid online.

Cost 4: Renewals

How long a card lasts. DPH says the Medical Cannabis card is valid for five years, with the expiration date printed on the front.

What renewal involves. DPH says that after the card expires, you must consult your physician to renew it. Budget for:

  • A renewal evaluation fee from your certifying practice
  • The $30 state card fee, plus $3.75 if you pay online

Plan ahead. Schedule your renewal evaluation before the printed expiration date so you do not have a gap in your registration. A lapsed card means you cannot legally purchase or possess medical cannabis until you are recertified.

Older cards. DPH says any unexpired Low THC Oil Registry Card remains valid until its printed expiration date. You do not need to pay for a new card just because the program was renamed.

Cost 5: Lost or Incorrect Cards

If you lose your card, or the information on it is wrong or outdated, DPH asks you to contact the Georgia Medical Cannabis Program at (770) 909-2765 or by email through the DPH patient page. Ask the program about any replacement fee at that time, since the patient page does not list one.

Cost 6: Medical Cannabis Products

Products are the most variable cost, and for many patients they are the largest ongoing one.

What affects product prices:

  • Product type. Oils, tinctures, capsules, ingestibles, topicals, transdermal patches, and, for adult patients above the statutory age threshold, vaporizer products. See our guide to Georgia medical cannabis product formats.
  • Milligrams of THC and CBD per package. Higher-strength packages generally cost more. No package may contain more than 1,200 mg of THC.
  • Where you buy. Prices can differ between GMCC-licensed dispensaries and Board of Pharmacy-licensed independent pharmacies. See our guide to where to buy medical cannabis in Georgia.
  • Promotions. Some sellers offer first-visit or loyalty discounts. Ask directly and confirm the current terms.

Insurance and products. Do not expect health insurance to cover medical cannabis products. Confirm with your plan if you have questions.

Devices. If you are eligible for vaporizer products and choose flower for vaporization, you will need a dry-herb vaporizer device, which is a separate purchase. Pre-filled vape cartridges also require a compatible battery. Ask your seller what they carry.

Budget inside the legal limit. Georgia caps possession at 12,000 mg of total THC across everything you have on hand. Buying in bulk to save money can put you over the limit. Plan purchases around what you will actually use.

Only buy from licensed sellers. Products from unlicensed sources may seem cheaper, but they are not covered by your card, carry no verified testing, and expose you to legal risk.

Other Costs People Forget

Medical records. If you need copies of records from another provider, that office may charge a fee. Ask before requesting.

Proof of residency. DPH requires a current, unexpired ID with your Georgia address. If your ID does not show your current address, you will need an additional document such as a utility bill, phone bill, or pay stub. Replacing an expired ID before applying avoids delays.

Time and travel. Telehealth evaluations remove travel costs for the physician visit. Product purchases still require a trip to a licensed dispensary or pharmacy.

Years two through five typically involve only product costs. Plan for another evaluation and state fee as you approach year five.

How to Verify Current Prices

  • State fees: Check the DPH patient and caregiver page or call the Georgia Medical Cannabis Program at (770) 909-2765.
  • Physician fees: Get the price from the practice in writing before you book, and confirm what it includes.
  • Product prices: Check your dispensary’s or pharmacy’s current menu, or call ahead.

Be cautious of any source, including older blog posts, that quotes a different state fee, a different card validity period, or a different possession limit. Georgia’s program changed significantly on July 1, 2026, and many older pages have not been updated.
